In 1926, the Read House re-opened after a major transformation, the older parts of the hotel were stripped away and ten stories were added, with a design scheme influenced by the Palmer House in Chicago. During this period, it became a popular destination for travelers and was known for its luxurious accommodations and fine dining in the city’s center. The company wasted no time giving the hotel’s interior a more modern look, with new carpeting, paint, and furniture. During Provident’s ownership, a Bavarian-themed restaurant and a rock ‘n’ roll radio station were added. In 1978, the Chattanooga Choo Choo, the original Chattanooga terminal rail station, bought the Read House and added a disco on the mezzanine level that only lasted two years.

Jealousy, or perhaps revenge, had been at the root of the murder. According to local lore, Annalisa’s lover first brought her to the hotel sometime in the 1920s--while she was still alive, of course. Some believe that Annalisa was a prostitute, and she quickly took up with another man--sometimes even parading her new love in front of her old suitor. Instead of going through the hassle of a remodel, two architects from the design firm Holabird and Roche, opted to have the Read House Hotel demolished. From there, they began the sketches for a new hotel that could compete with the likes of other early twentieth-century models.

The Manor House rooms are slightly less expensive than the Historic Tower rooms. They’re still very nice and comfortable, with the same level of amenities and services but the Art Deco theming is stronger in the tower.

The beds were amazing...so comfortable and the pillows were equally plush. And lastly we required assistance to and from our room because we were traveling with my elderly mother.
The feeling of openness was nice, but I didn’t need all that room. I had a walk-in closet with storage drawers and two bathrobes. The closet lights automatically opened when I opened the doors. If you go left, you’ll be in the bar and billiards area with adjacent meeting rooms, and if you go right, you’ll hit the elevators to the historic tower rooms and the restaurant and coffee shop areas. The public areas are available for anyone to come to explore.

Room was good size & comfortable, bathroom was large with nice amenities. The history of the property was nice and the staff was amazing. The Read House boasts nearly 200 years of fascinating history, from surviving The Civil War to hosting Elvis. It has endured floods, epidemics, the Great Depression, and an ever-changing Chattanooga.
Lookout Mountain and its famed attractions, like the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Parks, are a 15- to 20-minute drive from the hotel. Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is an 18-minute drive, and the Volkswagen of America Group headquarters is 22 minutes away. The Read House is a downtown Chattanooga landmark that has hosted many prominent politicians and celebrities since the current property opened in 1926. It’s near the city’s top attractions, and its spectacular Silver Ballroom is a local favorite for weddings and corporate events.
